Wikipedia

Wikipedia offers lots of support for educators who want to get their students involved in editing; you need a decent familiarity with how to edit a basic Wikipedia page, but all . (Please note that in order to create Wikipedia accounts, students will need to be informed that Wikipedia will store their data on US servers; however, they can author under pseudonyms if they choose.)

Three kinds of assignments:

      • Create / improve entries. This is useful especially in areas where students can generate new knowledge for a general audience.
      • Create new multimedia content. This can include creating flowcharts, diagrams, and uploading photographs or even making animated gifs.
      • Translate articles. This is great for language-learning classrooms; the non-English Wikipedias are largely in need of expansion.

You can include the Wikipedia article review process as part of the grading process, as some instructors have done.

And if you like the collaboration of Wikipedia, but you would like something more specific to your class and less readily accessible to the world (but still open!), the TRU Kumu Wiki is a great solution.
